Biography:
Billy
Sherry is a graduate of Georgetown University
in Washington, D.C., where he studied
sculpture under Leonard Cave. His early
work in carved wood was soon replaced
with large steel abstract pieces after
he met and worked with the French sculptor
Marc Berlet in Miami. His work is abstract,
using the natural geometry of steel
in formal and often lyrical statements.
He says of his work, "I work in
an abstract expressionist mode, building
the sculpture usually with no preconceived
plan. I like the angular expression
of steel. The constructive process affords
me freedom to experiment in many directions.
I strive for clarity and succinctness
in my work." His work is grounded
in the tradition of Gonzalez, Smith
and Caro, yet it expresses a clear and
individual style.
Billy
Sherry is a founding member of The (x)
Gallery, a cooperative of contemporary
art on Nantucket. His work is shown
with The Provincetown Group Gallery,
East East Gallery, and most recently
The Art Cabinet in Nantucket.
